Did you know that people with dental problems are more likely to develop feelings anxiety or depression? Your smile is one of the first things others notice about you, and if yours is riddled with imperfections, you might worry about others judging how you look.
Issues like chips, cracks, stubborn stains, minor gaps, and mild misalignments can be addressed with porcelain veneers. These thin shells are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth to mask aesthetic concerns. Continue reading to learn more about the process of getting them so you can make an informed decision to enhance your appearance!
Step #1: Consultation & Preparation
Before proceeding, you must schedule a consultation with your dentist to ensure that veneers are the right solution to meet your unique needs. Your dental team will update your medical history then examine your mouth so no pre-existing issues, like cavities or gum disease, interfere with the results.
If everything checks out, they’ll continue by removing a thin amount of enamel so the ceramic covers fit correctly without extra bulk. Although they only remove about .2 to .5 millimeters of material, it’s enough to leave your pearly whites somewhat more vulnerable to tooth decay, gum disease, and injuries. Plus, it doesn’t regenerate, meaning you’ll need to have veneers or another restoration in place to safeguard your smile moving forward.
Step #2: Impressions & Temporary Veneers
Once your teeth have been prepared, your dentist will make impressions of them, which will be sent to a special dental laboratory to begin their creation. Then, your dentist will likely place a short-term solution to safeguard your smile until they’re delivered.
Temporary veneers can protect your teeth, but they’re only intended to be worn for a couple of weeks, so they’re not as durable as your final prosthetics will be. You can avoid damaging or dislodging them by steering clear of overly hard or sticky foods, like crusty bread, fresh fruits and veggies, hard candies, or sticky taffy.
Step #3: Final Delivery & Placement
When the dental lab returns your veneers to your provider, you’ll be scheduled for a final fitting. Your dentist will ensure that your restorations fit correctly and function as intended. Once they verify that no adjustments are required, they’ll cement the final product to the front sides of your teeth. Then, they’ll remove any excess material and polish your grin until it shines.
Once the process is complete, you’ll have a perfectly enhanced smile you can be proud of!
