Invisalign really is a convenient orthodontic treatment. Instead of using metal brackets and wires, it relies on clear plastic trays that straighten teeth in just a year! Still, the process has its share of aftercare needs. In particular, it has you use a retainer to preserve your straightened smile. You may be wondering, then, what the timeline is for this new appliance. To help you learn the answer, here’s a summary of how long and why to wear a retainer after finishing Invisalign in Raleigh.
How Long Should I Wear the Retainer?
Technically, you should use a retainer post-Invisalign for the rest of your life. That doesn’t mean wearing it 24/7, mind you, but you’ll need to wear it at regular intervals from now on.
Right after finishing treatment, for example, you’d wear a retainer day and night. This stage would then go on for about three to six months.
After those first months, you’ll be able to wear it just at night. Over time, it may be possible to only use it every two to four nights, depending on if it feels tight.
Why Do I Need to Do So?
As referenced above, you need to wear a retainer to preserve your Invisalign results.
You see, teeth won’t just stay straight once you finish with the trays. Left alone, they’ll naturally (and quickly) start to shift back to their original and crooked positions. This reversion is especially likely in the first few months after the straightening process.
It’s crucial, then, to wear the retainer. Doing so will fix your teeth in their final, perfect position and stop unwanted movements. On the other hand, going without the retainer will cause your treatment to come undone.
Retainer Care Tips
To ensure your retainer keeps your teeth “in shape,” you’ll need to care for it. That said, how you do so will depend on whether it’s fixed or removable.
If it’s a fixed retainer, clean it alongside your teeth. You’ll need to brush the wire gently with a toothbrush. Also, use interdental brushes between teeth to remove plaque.
Per their name, removable retainers should be removed and cleaned twice daily. For the latter task, use plain warm water and a toothbrush. Ensure not to include toothpaste, as it would take the shine off the Invisalign retainer.
As you can see, a retainer is a lifelong commitment after you’ve finished Invisalign in Raleigh. Remember to wear it daily so your straight smile lasts for many years.
